"Every day is a new day, we have another opportunity tomorrow and the guys came out tonight and competed," Don Kelly said. "The way Bailey set the tone, offense, finding a way, (Bryan) Reynolds coming up with the big hit there to drive in the run and (Oneil Cruz) getting a good secondary lead and flying home. That’s what we’re looking for every day."
Falter used 79 pitches to work seven innings and allowed four hits. He struck out five and stranded three, including TJ Friedl and Santiago Espinal, who led off the first and fourth innings with a triple and double, respectively. The Reds were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
Reynolds singled home Cruz in the sixth inning for the Pirates' lone run. Cruz stole his major-league leading 18th base in the inning after drawing his second walk.
Dennis Santana and David Bednar worked two scoreless innings to preserve the Pirates' shutout. Bednar picked up his fourth save.
