Out of an abundance of precaution, Bailey Falter will not pitch today against the Twins in Fort Myers, Fla. according to senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. Falter played catch yesterday and "didn't recover the way he usually does in between his five days of rest."
Tomczyk said Falter was feeling general body soreness and didn't recover as he normally does at this time of the year: "We have two weeks to go, he's still prepping for the season. We don't envision any hiccups, it's just we wanted to be safe for him."
• Tomczyk said there isn’t any new news regarding Johan Oviedo (right lat strain). He also touched on whether this injury will cause Oviedo to start all over again in his recovery process after missing all of last season due to Tommy John surgery.
"I wouldn't say starting over again, because in general with rehab, for every week down it generally takes two weeks to build back up to your previous level. I wouldn't say he's starting all over,” Tomczyk said. “He will have to get built up to a side and a live BP before we get back in games, but probably not as many. So he won't have to come in to spring training and go through the four-to-five sides, and then the four-to-five live BPs. He will have more of a foundation because he was built up conditioning wise, versus starting all over."
• Dauri Moreta (elbow) continues to throw his side sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
• Hunter Stratton (knee) is expected to throw a sim game in the coming days. He took part in PFPs, which is a progression in his rehab. He feels good and hasn’t experienced any issues.
"We're excited with getting Hunter back out there with sim games, and hopefully major-league spring training games in the near future,” Tomczyk said.
• Ke'Bryan Hayes (left side tightness) is back to full baseball activities. He’s expected to be available for game activity in the coming days.
• Spencer Horwitz (thumb extensor) continues with his hitting progression. He’s currently hitting off the tee, fielding, doing tosses against the wall with the medicine ball and responding well to all of that. He isn’t currently throwing. The next step is tee work, live coaches’ BP and then hitting velocity off the machine until they consider cutting him loose to play in a game. He is probably another 10 to 14 days away from the latter, but is making progress.
