For the 47th time this season, the Pirates played in a one-run game, losing 2-1 to the Reds to bring their record to 21-26 in such games.
The Pirates collected four hits against Reds' starter Nick Martinez over seven innings, two of which came in the third off a sacrifice fly from Tommy Pham to score Jared Triolo, who had doubled and moved to third on Spencer Horwitz's single to left field.
Horwitz did what he could tonight with a 10-pitch leadoff walk to start the game, two singles, and a 98-mph line drive to center in the eighth inning. After his third-inning single, the team managed two singles for the remainder of the game.
"First at-bat was a 10-pitch walk, came up with a big hit to left there where we were able to score, and then later on had another base hit to left," Don Kelly said, "Spence has been having really, really solid at-bats lately. That first at-bat, 10-pitch walk was really big."
In Horwitz's last 24 games, he's hitting .310 with an .860 OPS, three home runs and 17 RBIs. The Pirates still rank last in Major League Baseball in runs scored (418), home runs (83), slugging (.346), and OPS (.649).
