Carmen Mlodzinski made his third appearance of the spring on Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings against the Red Sox. 

Mlodzinski threw 19 of 24 pitches for strikes and went to his four-seam fastball and gyro slider 10 times apiece. He generated four swings and misses with the latter pitch, one he implemented into his arsenal last season and limited opposing hitters to a .232 batting average when turning to it 26.9% of the time. 

"I think that pitch has been pretty good for me in my career, especially last year when I really started throwing it," Mlodzinski told me postgame. "It kind of just gives me a little more space with my fastball up in the zone because I can spin it underneath with good arm speed and good velocity. The numbers I had on it last year were good and it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be good again, but I would say it's definitely part of the bread and butter with the four-seam and the gyro underneath."
