Carmen Mlodzinski appeared rather disheartened and didn't have much to say regarding his move to the bullpen, which comes as a result of JaredJones returning to the starting rotation to start against the Twins Friday night at PNC Park.
Mlodzinski did say that he's proud of the work he's been able to do as a starter, but he's "communicating with the organization and the people in my corner, whether that's my family or my agency, about what's next."
If what's next doesn't involve transitioning to the bullpen as planned, it's possible that Mlodzinski's discontent could result in him wanting out. And perhaps that doesn't mean just out of the Pirates' rotation.
This is the second straight season in which the Pirates have utilized Mlodzinski as a starter before moving him to the bullpen. Last season, Mlodzinski made nine straight starts before being optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis on May 21, 2025. He returned to the big leagues in mid-June and pitched primarily out of the bullpen.
