Jared Jones (right elbow contusion) had more scans done Monday, which confirmed no fractures in his elbow. That is the best news the Pirates were hoping for coming back home from their road trip.
Jones' next start, however, remains in question. He did play catch at PNC Park today, which is a good sign. However, director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Tuesday that Jones is still officially day-to-day and needs to clear hurdles before it's decided that he can make his next scheduled start.
The Pirates will evaluate Jones after today's catch, then determine whether or not he can throw his next bullpen, scheduled for Thursday. If he is able to throw his scheduled bullpen, they should be able to have a good indication of whether or not he'll make his next start.
Overall, Tomczyk said the club is "very optimistic" about Jones and that he is trending in the right direction.
Other medical updates from Tomczyk:
• Oneil Cruz - The bone in his hand is "healing well." He's been cleared to begin gripping activities and the team is hoping he can start swinging a bat this week.
• Wilber Dotel - Threw a two up, 30-pitch bullpen today, which went well. They are looking to get him some game activity this week, meaning a rehab assignment.
• Nick Yorke - Sustained a non-surgical fracture in his right middle finger on a hit by pitch last week. He will be splinted for "about a month," and will then need to be built up from there.
• Hunter Barco - Left elbow inflammation. The club is sending all info to Dr. Keith Meister, who performed the Tommy John surgery on Barco. The ligament not of issue, but Barco will not be throwing for 5-7 days. The initial thought from the team is they avoided something serious with Barco, though his prognosis is very much in the air.
• There are no concerns over Ryan O’Hearn (quad) and Bryan Reynolds (groin) managing their respective issues.
