After a rare rough start lasting only four innings and giving up four earned runs against the Brewers, Paul Skenes notched his 16th quality start of the season tossing six innings with two earned runs allowed on one walk, fives hits, and eight strikeouts tonight versus the Blue Jays at PNC Park as the Pirates won 5-2.
On his last start, Skenes spoke about not having all of his arsenal, this evening on his performance with his pitches, he said, "I was pretty confident in everything today. The other day was just one of those days, nice thing is like in terms of body control and execution, stuff like that, usually doesn't happen twice in a row."
The two runs were the first allowed by Skenes in his last five starts at PNC Park dating back to June 8 against the Phillies.
In the second and third innings, he needed 47 pitches to escape two singles in the second that were book-ended by three strike outs and a third inning giving up two singles, a double, and those two runs.
Skenes said on his heavy focus of the four-seam fastball after throwing it 51 out of his 96 pitches, "Fastball felt good out of the gate. Changeup felt good. I know I didn't get all of my punchouts on those, but I was happy with my execution for the most part today."
