Tim Mayza (left arm) will be out for an extended period of time, according to the Pirates' senior director of sports medicine, Todd Tomczyk, as he's been placed on no-throw status for at least the next six weeks.
Mayza was placed on the 15-day IL this past weekend with a left lat muscle strain. However, Tomczyk said today that the injury has been diagnosed as a injuries to his left latissimus dorsi muscle and his teres major muscle.
"Unfortunately, Tim is out for a while," Tomczyk said.
More injury updates from Tomczyk:
• Endy Rodriguez (right index finger laceration) is on the mend.
After consulting with Dr. Steven Shin, a renowned hand doctor here in the Los Angeles area, Rodriguez has been cleared to move his finger and can start participating in light baseball activities, such as throwing and hitting in the near future. He also does not have to wait until his stitches are removed to move forward with his recovery.
Before today's game, Rodriguez was seen lightly tossing on the field at Angel Stadium while participating in fielding drills with other players. He has been out since suffering the injury in the Pirates' 10-3 win over the Nationals on April 14.
"The wound is healing very well," Tomczyk said.
• Spencer Horwitz (thumb extensor) has transitioned his rehab to Pirate City in Bradenton, Fla. and faced Dauri Moreta and other minor-league pitchers in live batting practice on Tuesday. The plan is for him to repeat that workload tomorrow and see how he responds.
Seeing that Horwitz did not have a spring training due to the injury, Tomczyk said it's unclear how long he will be in Florida before taking a rehab assignment.
"We're trying to get him as comfortable as we possibly can and he's meeting the demands so far down there, with only being doing there a couple days," Tomczyk said. "But, to give you an exact date of projection of a week or 10 days, we're taking it as this week he's in Florida, we're going to reassess by the end of this week to see what the deployment will be and what's best for him in his return."
• Jared Jones (elbow) is also in a good spot with his recovery, according to Tomczyk. He's scheduled to have repeat imaging later this week as he approaches the six-week mark and if that goes well, he would progress to "some type of throwing activity."
• Nick Gonzales (left ankle) is full weight bearing and is playing light catch. He will get another X-ray by the end of this week to see if he can be out of his walking boot full-time. Tomczyk said he's also been running on an Ultra-G treadmill at 65% of his body weight.
• As I mentioned above, Moreta (elbow) faced Horwitz in live batting earlier this week and has been able to throw all of his pitches with "intent and conviction," according to Tomczyk. He's thrown anywhere from 20-25 pitches during his live batting practice sessions and will throw another sim game later this week. How he responds will determine next steps, but Tomczyk said he's closer to making a rehab assignment than he has been.
• Colin Holderman (right knee sprain) has made two appearances with Class AAA Indianapolis. He's thrown 30 pitches over 1 2/3 innings while giving up three hits, one home run and has struck out one.
• Johan Oviedo (right lat strain) is throwing out to 75 feet in his rehab and they will continue to build up his distance, intensity and volume.
• The Pirates' bullpen continued to stay hot as Dennis Santana, Caleb Ferguson and David Bednar pitched three scoreless innings of relief. The bullpen hasn't allowed a run while on the West Coast and has allowed just one hit, which came tonight off Santana in the ninth.
• Every hitter that stepped into the batter's box for the Pirates tonight recorded a hit as they tallied 11 total and 10 of them were singles. However, they left eight runners on base and were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position as they grounded into three double plays.
I asked Derek Shelton afterward if, despite the success, he felt like there might still be a little meat left on the bone and he pointed directly to those inning-ending double plays, which came in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and stranded four runners.
"We hit into three or four double plays, and every single one we hit right on the nose, we just hit it into the ground," Shelton said. "(Enmanuel) Valdez hit into one, Tommy (Pham) hit into one, I think (Adam Frazier) hit into one. We took good swings at them, so as long as we’re taking good aggressive swings, I’m okay. It may be something we have to manipulate a little bit, maybe we get guys moving. Their pitchers did a really good job of holding guys today. But overall, really happy with our swings."
