Alonna Brown, Kavan Markwood's girlfriend, shared an update earlier this afternoon on Markwood's status following the incident on Wednesday: "Kavan is awake and continuing to work toward making his body stronger each day. At this time, he needs rest, peace, prayers, privacy and all the positive thoughts and energy you can send as he continues on his journey. We are deeply grateful for the incredible support, care and strength of the community standing with us. Your unwavering presence means more than words can express. Please continue to keep Kavan in your thoughts."
A GoFundMe page that was created by Brown's mother, Jennifer Phillips, to help assist Markwood and his family with medical bills and financial hardships that have resulted from the incident also provided an update, stating: "As of this morning, Kavan is awake, alert and able to speak. After everything he’s been through since the accident on Wednesday night, this progress feels nothing short of miraculous. He still has a long road ahead of him, but today brought a moment of hope that we’ve all been holding onto."
As of Saturday afternoon, $25,256 had been raised through 596 donations, with a fundraising goal of $35,000.
Markwood, a 2022 South Allegheny graduate, plunged onto the warning track during Andrew McCutchen's two-run double in the seventh inning. According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the incident is being treated as "accidental in nature."
Since then, Markwood has received plenty of support on social media from the South Allegheny School District, Wheeling and Walsh universities, where he played collegiate football, along with several others.
