• Ashcraft strikes out Cronenworth and Iglesias looking. 

• Pirates go down in order in the eighth as Braxton Ashcraft takes over.

• End of seventh inning: Ferguson brings an end to that ... finally, by striking out Bogaerts. The damage is done though and the Pirates will have to face a strong Padres bullpen.

• RUN: Wade hits one back to the mound and it bounces off Ferguson. He can't find it and Tatis scores from third. Padres, 6-4

• Ferguson walks Merrill to load the bases again.

• RUN: Machado then hits a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Diaz. Padres, 5-4

• RUN: Arraez singles into left to score Iglesias. Tied, 4-4

• Kelly pulls Rainey and goes to Caleb Ferguson out of the pen to face the lefty Arraez.

• Rainey issues his third free pass of the inning as he walks Tatis to load the bases.

• RUN: Diaz singles home Bogaerts from second. That brings up Tatis. Pirates, 4-3

• Rainey walks Iglesias and that brings Elias Diaz to the plate, who's pinch-hitting for Maldonado.

• Cronenworth flies out to right. One away.

• He issues a leadoff walk to Bogaerts.

• Tanner Rainey gets the seventh.

• Horwitz hits a groundball to Machado, who throws him out at first.

• Reynolds singles into right field and Shildt goes back to his bullpen, brining in Adrian Morejon to face Horwitz for the lefty-lefty matchup.

• Cutch is thrown off by a 2-2 curveball for strike three. Two away.

• Cruz strikes out on a fastball on the outer edge. 

• End of sixth inning: Tyler Wade is pinch-hitting for Lockridge and he flies out to right. Took Shugart three pitches.

• Heaney's day is done after that. His final line: 5 2/3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 K. He'll be on the hook for Merrill too. Chase Shugart is taking over. 

• RUN: Heaney gets by Machado but can't get by Merrill as he doubles down the right field line, kicking up chalk on the way. Pirates, 4-2

• Arraez doubles down the left field line. Pham tried to make a diving catch but missed. Would've been a tough play there.

• Tatis sends a linedrive into left center, but Pham tracks it down.

• IKF grounds out to short and that's back-to-back 1-2-3 innings after Frazier's home run in the fourth. 

• Endy pops out in foul territory behind third. Two away.

• Pham flies out to center.

• Pham is not liked in San Diego. He's booed every time he steps to the plate or his name is announced over the PA.

• David Morgan comes in for the Padres.

• End of fifth inning: Maldonado grounds out to IKF. 

• Heaney gets a groundout and a flyout. Cruz and IKF almost collide on the latter as Cruz came flying in from center. IKF ducked out of the way at the last second.

• Frazier strikes out after an eight-pitch at-bat.

• 6-3, Hayes

• Horwitz smokes a linedrive to Merrill in center. Didn't have to go far for it.

• End of fourth inning: Heaney works a clean 1-2-3 and has retired the last nine. He's at 66 pitches.

• Lockridge hits a routine groundball to short for IKF.

• Merrill hits a line drive to left as Pham takes a few steps back to catch it.

• Cutch strikes out. Reynolds hits a swinging bunt in front of the plate but Maldonado throws a strike to first to get him by a hair. Wow.

• Three walks in three at-bats for Cruz, now. He was at 1-2 before working all the way back.

• After 3 1/3 innings, Vásquez is done. Wandy Peralta will replace him.

• IKF singles into left field. That's going to create some action in the Padres' bullpen.

• Endy strikes out for the second time today. Swung over a low changeup.

• Pham singles into center.

• Sheets exited the game, seemed to be alright. Brandon Lockridge replaced him. 

• HOME RUN: Frazier now hits a deep drive over the left field wall and Sheets runs into the wall while truing to make the catch. He's down and is being attended to by trainers. Pirates, 4-1 

• End of third inning: A couple of loud outs there as Machado smokes one to right that Reynolds tracks down.

• Arraez sends one to Pham in left. Two away.

• Tatis flies out to center.

• RUN: Hayes drives in Horwitz from second with an RBI to center field but gets caught between first and second when Machado cuts off the throw home. Pirates, 3-1

• Horwitz squares up a fastball in the bottom left corner of the zone and sends a tailing linedrive over Sheets' head in left for a groundrule double. 

• Reynolds grounds out to first.

• HOME RUN: Cutch does it again! Catches a 2-2 curveball on the outer half and drives it to the left field seats. That ties Roberto Clemente for third on the Pirates' all-time home run list. Pirates, 2-1

• That's stolen base No. 20 for Cruz. He's one behind Luis Robert for the league lead.

• Cruz falls behind 0-2 but works for his second walk today.

• IKF grounds out to short, turning it back to the top of the order.

• End of second inning: Heaney avoids further damage after the leadoff single and strikes out back-to-back hitters. 

• Heaney bounces back to strike out Iglesias. Caught the top left corner with a fastball.

• Bogaerts squares up a fastball and sends it out to right field for a base knock. Cronenworth then sends him to second with a sacrifice bunt in which Hayes makes a really nice barehanded play.

• Endy goes down on six pitches in his first at-bat since returning from the injured list.

• Frazier and Pham go down in order. Frazier grounded out to first, Pham lined out to center.

• End of first inning: Sheets drives one into the left center gap but Cruz makes a nice leaping catch on the run to rob it. Saved a run there.

• Merrill then jumps on a first-pitch curve and doubles to left center.

• HOME RUN: Manny Machado capitalizes on a slider in the bottom left corner of the zone and sends it off the scoreboard in left field. Padres, 1-0

• Heaney gets back-to-back groundballs from Tatis and Arraez. Two away.

• Hayes grounds out to third and that strands two runners in the first.

• Horwitz flies out to left, bringing Hayes to the plate.

• Peralta hands out two free bases in the first three hitters as Reynolds works a walk. Looks like the Pirates are going to be patient today.

• Cruz looked like he got a late jump there, or at least off to a slow start, and still swiped second. His closing speed is ridiculous.

• Cutch strikes out on an inside cutter. Barely caught the edge. He didn't like it.

• Cruz walks on five pitches. Looked like there was a little hesitation on that last pitch but Cruz jogs down to first.
