It was a bittersweet moment for AndrewMcCutchen and a bittersweet win for the Pirates on a night where concern regarding the well being of a critically-injured fanoutweighed anything else.
McCutchen came through in a crucial situation, as his two-run double in the seventh inning gave the Pirates a lead they wouldn't relinquish in securing a 4-3 victory over the Cubs on a somber night at PNC Park.
McCutchen came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on and the Pirates facing a one-run deficit. Isiah Kiner-Falefa reached with one out on an error by Cubs third baseman JonBerti and BryanReynolds soon followed with a two-out single. One batter later, this happened:
McCutchen went out of the zone to get a 3-2 slider from Caleb Thielbar and benefitted from a bounce off the leg of a diving Dansby Swanson, which kicked the ball out into right field and allowed both runs to score.
It was McCutchen's lone hit of the night, but it was timely and significant in helping the Pirates tie up the series heading into tomorrow's 12:35 p.m. finale. It's not much of a surprise that he came through in that spot, either. McCutchen's been red hot over his last seven games in particular, hitting .346 with a .991 OPS. He's hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.
Following the go-ahead score, Caleb Ferguson tossed a clean eighth inning and David Bednar closed out the game to secure his third save of the season and second since being recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis.
Carmen Mlodzinski didn't factor into the decision, but was effective through four innings of work. He allowed two runs -- both in the fifth -- on six hits and a walk while striking out four batters. Mlodzinski held the Cubs scoreless through the first four innings before being replaced by Ryan Borucki with two on and nobody out in the fifth.
