Andrew Heaney allowed seven earned runs for a second straight start and couldn't avoid being hurt by the long ball, while the Pirates offense failed to overcome a sizable deficit in a 9-3 loss to the Brewers tonight at American Family Field.
After giving up seven runs on eight hits over four innings against the Tigers on Thursday, Heaney struggled again, allowing three home runs and surrendering seven hits along with three walks in four innings. Joey Ortiz hit two of those home runs -- a two-run shot in the third inning and a solo in the fourth -- and Caleb Durbin added a three-run shot in the fourth. The 14 runs are the most Heaney has allowed over a two-start span in his 12-year big-league career.
"Falling behind and serving up meatballs," Heaney said. "Just a pretty poor example of how to pitch."
The Pirates finished with eight hits, including a three-run homer by NickGonzales in the sixth. They generated four hits in the first two innings and wasted two early scoring opportunities before going hitless in five of the final seven innings. FreddyPeralta helped keep them in check, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out eight batters over five innings.
