The Cardinals' José Fermín gets tagged out by Henry Davis in the ninth inning Tuesday night at PNC Park.
After generating 37 runs of support over their previous four games, the Pirates' offense found runs harder to come by tonight. It wasn't until the eighth inning when they finally broke through, scoring their lone run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Henry Davis and extending their winning streak to a season-best five games with a 1-0 win over the Cardinals at PNC Park.
"Winning is definitely more fun than losing," said SpencerHorwitz, who contributed two crucial defensive plays in the win. "We're starting to click. Everyone is doing their part and as long as we continue to do that, hopefully we can continue winning games."
Andre Pallante limited the Pirates to a fourth-inning single by Andrew McCutchen, as he walked one batter and struck out three over seven scoreless innings. But in the eighth, Ke'Bryan Hayes singled to lead off and Adam Frazier followed with a double before Davis' sac fly.
The Cardinals were held at bay by PaulSkenes, who allowed five hits and struck out five over five scoreless innings. Caleb Ferguson, Isaac Mattson and DavidBednar combined to throw four scoreless in relief to preserve a second straight shutout.
