Arkansas third baseman Brent Iredale --the Pirates' seventh-round pick at No. 203 -- lit up New Mexico Junior College for two years. After a solid season at Arkansas, the Pirates say they believe he can do more.
Over two years at New Mexico Junior College, Iredale, an Australian native, slashed .437/.543/.925 with 42 home runs and 40 steals in 113 games. He slashed .286/.450/.544 with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs at Arkansas.
"I think we see some upside in terms of what we may be able to tap into from a developmental perspective, both offensively and defensively on the corners," Justin Horowitz said.
At 6-3, 200 pounds, Iredale was listed at No. 177 by MLB Pipeline and No. 236 by Baseball America. He has a lot of raw power with high exit velocities, but that comes with a tendency to swing and miss at pitches in the zone. He looks to launch balls to the pull side with an aggressive approach that allows him to tap into his raw power.
