Brandon Cain has been a two-way player for most of his college career. He didn't get much of an opportunity to pitch for Oklahoma this past season, but the Pirates said they saw enough potential in him to draft him in the 19th round.
"He's been a two-way player in the past. He's very athletic. Got a big arm," Justin Horowitz said. "Someone we're excited to bring into the organization and hand off to our pitching development people and see where we can go with it and help the kid tap into all that untapped potential."
Cain, who's the nephew of major-league veteran Lorenzo Cain, made one appearance at Oklahoma and it didn't go well. He faced six batters, allowed four hits, three earned runs and a home run. Before transferring to the Sooners, he made 11 appearances for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and produced an 8.06 ERA over 41 1/3 innings. He walked 36 and struck out 40.
Cain also pitched for the Frederick Keys in the MLB Draft League, going 2-1 in eight games. He produced a 1.86 ERA over 9 2/3 innings and struck out 10 while walking 12.
