The Pirates' recent offensive surge, one that now includes tonight's 7-0 win over the Cardinals at PNC Park, is rather historic in more ways than one.
Here are some facts to digest:
• During their current four-game winning streak, the Pirates have scored at least seven runs in every game, while allowing two or fewer runs in every game. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, they've only ever had three winning streaks of at least four games where it scored at least seven runs and allowed two or fewer runs in every game during the streak. The previous two streaks were both four-game winning streaks during the 1911 season.
• The Pirates have outscored opponents 37-4 during their four-game winning streak. Their +33 run differential during the streak is its best during any four-game span since also having a +33 run differential from September 16-19, 1975. During that stretch, they outscored opponents, 39-6.
• The Pirates are one of seven Major League Baseball teams (nine instances) since at least 1901 to score 37 or more runs and allow four runs or fewer in a four-game span, joining the 2018 Cleveland Indians, the 1999 Baltimore Orioles, the 1980 Milwaukee Brewers, the 1939 New York Yankees, the 1938 New York Yankees (two times), the 1934 Detroit Tigers and the 1906 Chicago Cubs.
• The Pirates have now scored 37 runs over their last four games, their fourth such streak with 37-plus runs scored since 2016. That year, they scored 41 runs over four wins against the Phillies and Reds. Then, in 2023, they totaled 37 runs over four games against the Rockies and Reds in April and again scored 41 runs in four September victories against the Cubs and Reds.
The Pirates were held in check and without a hit in five of their eight innings at the plate tonight. But they did enough in two run-scoring innings, including a six-run, seven-hit fifth, to provide plenty of separation for a fourth consecutive night. And it's not like the same guys are contributing to this recent success. On this night, every member of the Pirates' lineup collected at least one hit and helped account for their 11-hit total. SpencerHorwitz had two hits and three RBIs, while BryanReynolds also had two hits to register his sixth multi-hit performance over his last eight games.
"When you start to get that production from the bottom of the order, that's been really consistent lately, it takes a lot of pressure off the top," DonKelly said. "You see great at-bats throughout. For so long, we were searching for hits with guys on base. It was that missing ingredient. We're doing a really good job of that right now."
