Reds 7, Pirates 1: Defensive mistakes costly ... again
Mitch Keller held off the Reds for six innings tonight at PNC Park, but a costly throwing error by Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a missed catch by Tommy Pham in a tied game led to a downward spiral as the Pirates suffered their fourth straight loss, 7-1.
With two outs in the sixth, Austin Hays reached when Kiner-Falefa fielded a ground ball behind second base before spinning and throwing to first. The ball sailed into the Reds' dugout, allowing Hays to take second. He came around to score on a Gavin Lux line drive to left field that Pham dropped while trying to make a sliding catch.
"I want these guys to make plays. If we're going out there to play defense to not make mistakes, we're not in the frame of mind to be playing baseball," Don Kelly said when asked about Kiner-Falefa's throwing error. "That's the challenge. Being in charge of the infield prior to this, that's what I want the guys to do."
The Reds tagged David Bednar for two runs in the eighth inning when Elly De La Cruz doubled home TJ Friedl, then Hays singled inDe La Cruz. Cincinnati pulled away in the ninth when Colin Holderman allowed three runs, inflating his season ERA to 9.00.
The Pirates extended their streak of scoring four or fewer runs to 24 games. The lineup struck out eight times and recorded five hits while walking just once. This was their seventh game in a row without 10 hits.
