Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Spencer Horwitz celebrate after a win Wednesday in San Francisco.
On a day the Pirates traded Ke'BryanHayes and CalebFerguson, they had to grind to keep their winning ways going, scoring a run without a hit in the 10th inning, then having IsaacMattson escape a jam to keep the Giants at bay, 2-1, for their fifth in a row and a series sweep this afternoon at Oracle Park.
The Pirates, who have now won eight of their last nine games, went 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position, stranded 13 runners on base and struck out 14 times as a team. LoganWebb had 11 strikeouts through 5 2/3 innings.
“I looked up the one time and I think it was eight of the first nine (struck out), and then we found a way to slow it down a little bit, find a way," DonKelly said. "We had guys on base. Couldn't get that big base hit, but continued to put at-bats together, especially there at the end. ... Just find a way to scratch and claw and score a run.”
MikeBurrows delivered his second straight quality start by allowing one run on three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over six innings. He now has six starts in which he's gone five or more innings and allowed two or fewer runs.
