Extra Bases: Davis playing 'with his hair on fire'
Henry Davis may still be trying to figure it out at the plate in the major leagues, but since being recalled to the Pirates on April 12 the 25-year-old backstop has found other ways to impact games.
He's consistently been praised by pitchers for his ability to call a game and the prep work that goes into it. On this night, he did that and more by putting in a little extra effort to put pressure on the Dodgers defense in the Pirates' 3-0 win.
Just take a look:
Yes, the throw may have been a little off line but one thing you can't see in the video is how quickly Davis broke out of the box to try to beat the throw to first. That caused Max Muncy to hurry the throw and it ultimately ended up in the Pirates dugout, granting Davis a free base.
Oneil Cruz then stepped into the batter's box and drilled a single to right field to score Davis and give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
"You talk about winning on the margins and Henry plays the game with his hair on fire all the time and it ended up getting us a run there because he got down the line," Shelton said. "We got a little bit of a bobble on the ball, I think it made Muncy stutter step a little bit and he beat it out and we end up turning that into a run. It’s a big play in the game."
When asked about the play, Davis responded as you'd expect: "Yeah, it was great to be out there. Any way you can contribute to the team and win, it's a lot of fun. My personal goal is always play as hard as I can to sustain it."
• Yoshinobu Yamamoto entered tonight's contest with a 0.93 ERA and hadn't allowed a run in three starts. The Pirates got on him right away with Cruz scoring on a Enmanuel Valdez single in the top of the first inning. By the end of the third inning, Yamamoto had thrown 65 pitches and finished with 94 after five innings of work. He was still effective as he allowed five hits and struck out five, but he also walked four.
"We had some good at bats off him and we made him work," Shelton said. "Then after the third you saw him settle down a little bit, he had a quick inning but I was really pleased with our approach because he’s elite."
• Cruz stole another base tonight, giving him 12 on the season. He is now tied with Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong for the league lead.
• Adam Frazier and Ke'Bryan Hayes both extended their hitting streaks to nine and six games, respectively.
• Tommy Pham, who went 0-for-4 tonight is one hit shy of his 1,000th career hit.
• After working 2/3 of an inning in the seventh, Ryan Borucki hasn't allowed a hit in his last six appearances.
