While filling in for Ben Cherington on the team-produced weekly show on the Pirates Radio Network, assistant general manager Bryan Stroh said Justin Lawrence (right elbow inflammation) is seeking a second opinion and will be out for more than 15 days.
Lawrence was placed on the 15-day IL earlier this week after reporting elbow discomfort to the Pirates' training staff following his only appearance here on the West Coast in which he threw 2/3 of an inning, walked two and struck out one.
"I give him credit. He wasn't feeling great, he wasn't recovering the way he was used to and some guys try to work through that and you end up losing a game or two," Stroh said. "We really appreciate that he was able to get ahead of that and we were able to get a healthy arm up here."
When the Pirates placed Lawrence on the IL, Derek Shelton said: It flared up the other night and then when he came in yesterday, it just didn’t feel right. He’s thrown the ball really well for us and it was just one of those things as early as we are in April, we need to make sure he gets looked at. He’s in a good spot and really pleased with how he’s been since we’ve acquired him, we just have to make sure he’s alright."
The right-hander had appeared in 11 games this season, throwing 11 1/3 innings while producing a 0.79 ERA. He'd only allowed five hits, one earned run and six walks while striking out 15.
