Jared Jones has been cleared to begin throwing as he continues to recover from a right elbow UCL sprain, according to senior director of sports medicine ToddTomczyk.
Jones, who suffered the injury during spring training, has had two sessions of light catch out to 60 feet and has experienced no issues up to this point.
"Very encouraging signs for Jared," Tomczyk said this afternoon, adding and stressing the importance of him continuing to build up intensity and overall volume moving forward. "Start him at 45, start him at 60 and then he goes to 90, 120 with intent, with good form. It's going to be a collaborative effort, notably with Jared, with our pitching department and our performance team. (We want him to) continue to be pain free, continue to be fluid, but he missed six weeks, so he's going to need some time to build up."
Tomczyk acknowledged three to four weeks as a "good estimate" as to when Jones could begin throwing on a slope. It could be around 12 weeks before he returns to a major-league mound.
“We’re always open to accelerating that, if and when it’s safe and how it’s safe, and what’s best for Jared," Tomczyk said.
More from Tomczyk:
• Johan Oviedo (right elbow surgery and right lat strain) continues to dominate his rehab in Florida and is throwing out to 90 feet with no issues.
• Dauri Moreta (elbow) began his rehab assignment with Class A Bradenton yesterday, allowing a hit in a scoreless inning of work. Tomczyk said he got through that appearance without any issues.
“Super excited for him. All the work he put in, he really met the bar, actually exceeded it in our opinion," Tomczyk said. "From a rehab perspective, he came back to competition from Tommy John surgery in 13 months time. That’s pretty good.”
• Tim Mayza (left shoulder lat muscle strain) will be at a no-throw status for approximately six weeks.
• Justin Lawrence (right elbow inflammation) is still awaiting a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister.
• Endy Rodriguez (right hand laceration) will be immobilized for another week due to the complication of the laceration, where it's located -- top of the knuckle on his right index finger -- and the amount of motion that's needed in his injured finger. Tomczyk did say that it is healing, there is no sign of an infection and that surgery is no necessary as it will heal on its own.
“You’ll see him continue to do his modified baseball activities. Unfortunately, he will have to have this immobilized another week," Tomczyk said. "We’ll get another update next Tuesday, with a much more dedicated, definitive date of return.”
Rodriguez was initially immobilized after suffering the injury and cleared to begin light motion last week. The sutures were removed and he then began having some additional discomfort.
• SpencerHorwitz (wrist) has had no issues during his rehab assignment with Class AA Altoona. Horwitz went 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored in his second game with the Curve yesterday.
• Nick Gonzales (left ankle fracture) had a follow-up X-ray on Friday and was cleared to discharge the walking boot. He began walking normally with a little bit of support from an ankle brace.
"You’ll see him throwing. You’ll see him hitting. You’ll probably see him taking ground balls," Tomczyk said. "The goal for this week is to get him to start jogging and perform some agilities by the end of this week.”
