Extra bases: Lawrence (right elbow inflammation) headed to IL
Justin Lawrence is heading to the IL with right elbow inflammation, Derek Shelton said this afternoon at Angel Stadium.
Lawrence threw 2/3 of an inning on Tuesday against the Angels and walked two and struck out one. Shelton said that was when the inflammation flared up. However, they don't seem to be too worried about it and just want to make sure he's in a good spot.
"When he came in yesterday, it just didn’t feel right," Shelton said. "He’s thrown the ball really well for us and it was just one of those things as early as we are in April, we need to make sure he gets looked at. He’s in a good spot and really pleased with how he’s been since we’ve acquired him, we just have to make sure he’s alright."
The right-hander, who the Pirates claimed off waivers in spring training, has been lights out in his 11 appearances this season. He's thrown 11 1/3 innings, produced a 0.79 ERA, struck out 15 batters and has allowed just five hits while limiting hitters to a .139 batting average. He's also walked six batters.
• Zach Neto delivered the game-changing moment tonight in the Pirates' 4-3 loss to the Angels at Angel Stadium. In his fourth at-bat of the game, he jumped on a 1-2 sweeper from Chase Shugart that caught far too much of the plate and sent it just over the wall in the left-field corner. Shugart has been really good out of the bullpen for the Pirates since being called up on April 6. He'd allowed just one run before tonight's outing in 8 2/3 innings of work and carried a 1.04 ERA into tonight's game.
• Kyle Nicolas turned in arguably his best outing of the season tonight as he threw two innings of no-hit relief and struck out three.
"Outstanding," Shelton said. "I know he's put in some work with Oscar (Marin) and (Brent Strom) in the bullpen and even today. When we start talking about it, they felt really strong about the work he'd done, and I think we saw it today. It was really good stuff."
• Oneil Cruz hit his third leadoff home run of the season today, sending Tyler Anderson's second pitch into the right field seats to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. It carried 398 feet and had a 108.1 exit velocity.
