Justin Lawrence is scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister sometime next week to learn more about his right elbow injury, Pirates' senior director of sports medicine ToddTomczyk said this morning.
Lawrence is currently on the 60-day injured list with right elbow inflammation and has been in a waiting period to seek a second opinion. He hasn't pitched since April 22 in Los Angeles when he reported discomfort to the Pirates' training staff.
Prior to the injury, Lawrence was one of the Pirates' most reliable bullpen arms, allowing just one earned run on five hits and six walks with 15 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings. He limited opposing hitters to a .139 batting average over his 11 appearances.
Additional updates from Tomczyk:
• Johan Oviedo (right lat strain) is currently in the long toss portion of his return to throw program. He's set for repeat imaging later this week and will be sent to Dr. Meister to co-collaborate. If all physicians and rehab specialists agree, the next step will be for Oviedo to begin throwing off a mound sometime next week.
• JaredJones (elbow) is here in St. Louis and is throwing out to 75 feet with no issues.
• TimMayza (left shoulder lat muscle strain) is still rehabbing in Pittsburgh. No changes regarding his status.
• Dauri Moreta (elbow) threw 24 pitches in an inning of work with Class AAA Indianapolis yesterday. Tomczyk said he's recovering from some normal soreness.
• As I noted below, Isiah Kiner-Falefa (right hamstring strain) took ground balls on the field here at Busch Stadium earlier this morning and, according to Tomczyk, has also been hitting and performing agility-type activities. Kiner-Falefa is expected to begin running the bases by this weekend. A conversation will then take place in regard to whether he can become a full-complementary player by the weekend.
• Spencer Horwitz (elbow) is rehabbing with Class AAA Indianapolis and has had no issues. He continues to build up game reps and endurance. Horwitz went 2 for 4 with a double in his first game with the Indians last night.
• Nick Gonzales (left ankle fracture) is performing all baseball activities and participated in agility drills yesterday. Tomcyzk said Gonzales is expected to run the bases in the coming days.
• Endy Rodriguez (right hand laceration) was re-examined yesterday and cleared to remove the straight splint. He's been cleared to begin moving the finger and continues to play catch with no issues. Rodriguez has swung a bat, but with a slightly modified grip. Tomczyk said he's feeling good and will continue to ramp up baseball activities throughout the week.
