Sandy Alcantara silenced the Pirates' offense tonight and ended their four-game winning streak by losing to the Marlins, 3-2, tonight at PNC Park.
Alcantara has a 7.14 ERA through 13 starts for the season, but here, he pitched six scoreless innings, struck out six and walked one.
"He had it going today," Don Kelly said. "Fastball velo was up, changeup was good, breaking ball was good. He threw strikes, filled the zone up, in and out. Kept our guys off balanced, pitched in pretty effectively."
Oneil Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes each hit home runs in the eighth off Ronny Henriquez to cut Miami's lead to one. Spencer Horwitz and Nick Gonzales started the ninth with a walk and single, then moved into scoring position on Adam Frazier's groundout. But Calvin Faucher closed it out by getting Henry Davis to pop out to shallow right before striking out Hayes. The Pirates finished 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.
