Mets 2, Pirates 1: Pathetic offense punches itself out
The Pirates' offense, yet again, couldn't deliver a run amid countless opportunities tonight at Citi Field and Brett Baty's seventh inning home run off Mitch Keller was the ultimate decider as the Pirates lost to the Mets, 2-1.
Keller struck out eight and limited New York to two runs, five hits and a walk over seven innings. He also received one run of support as his teammates went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base. The lone run came on Henry Davis' bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
"We've got to find a way," Don Kelly said afterward. "Early on, second, third, fourth inning, had a guy on third, less than two, and there in the ninth. We've got to find a way to get those runs in and push them across because Mitch did a great job. Not for lack of work that these guys are putting in. Just have to find a way to get it done."
The Pirates stranded a runner on third in four straight innings. In the fourth, with runners at second and third and nobody out, Kodai Senga struck out three consecutive Pirates -- Alexander Canario, Jared Triolo and Ji Hwan Bae -- on 10 total pitches. In the ninth, with runners at second and third and one out, BryanReynolds struck out looking at a fastball right down the middle, and JoeyBart grounded out.
