Mets 4, Pirates 3: Skenes still out there all alone
GETTY
The Mets' Luisangel Acuña slides under Henry Davis' tag for a run in the seventh inning Monday night in New York.
Another solid six-inning start from Paul Skenes was wasted -- yeah, again -- as the offense (five hits), bullpen (David Bednar beaten in the ninth) and defense (Ke'Bryan Hayes beaten by a hard RBI grounder in the seventh) all failed him in the Pirates' 4-3 fall to the first-place Mets tonight here at Citi Field.
"Obviously disappointing to come up on the short end there," Don Kelly said afterward. "But I mean, just the battle that our guys put up, offensively, scratching and clawing, putting some runs on the board and found a way to push some across. Played some small ball there and got some runs, and just came up a little short."
Skenes allowed one run, six hits and three walks, striking out six, lowering his ERA to 2.63, and he was plenty good enough to win ... but the back-end bullpen and defense again combined for another deflating result. Bednar entered the ninth after the Pirates had rallied for a run to tie, 3-3, in the top half and, after one out, saw Francisco Lindor reach on a terribly untimelyIsiah Kiner-Falefa error, then a Juan Soto single that put runners at the corners for Pete Alonso's walkoff sacrifice fly.
• The standings:14-28, fifth place, Central Division
• The trends: Lost 12 of past 15, 2-2 with Kelly
• The next one: Mets, Tuesday, 7:10 p.m., Citi Field
