The Pirates and Mitch Keller are in agreement on a five-year, $77 million contract extension, a team source confirmed with DK Pittsburgh Sports. The deal, which is pending a physical, begins with the 2024 season and does not have any options.
Keller, 27, had a breakout season in 2023, striking out 210 batters and earned his first All-Star nod. In his first season as the club's true No. 1 starter, Keller logged 194 1/3 innings and posted a 4.21 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 3.80 FIP. He also tossed his first career shutout against the Rockies on May 8 at PNC Park.
Keller also started on opening day for the Pirates in 2023. And, in light of this contract extension, it only makes sense that he'll do it again in 2024:
Both Keller and the Pirates were interested in a possible extension this offseason. It was an opportune time for the club to lock up a top-of-the-rotation starter at an affordable cost while Keller gets financial security for the next five seasons.
Keller was under club control for only two more seasons, so locking him up now is a major win for this organization.
