Two four-run innings, 15 hits and an 8-for-19 performance with runners in scoring position paced the Pirates to a 10-3 win over the Marlins tonight at PNC Park, securing their first four-game winning streak since September.
Bryan Reynolds' bases-clearing triple in the third propelled the Pirates to a 4-1 lead before Spencer Horwitz, Nick Gonzales, Adam Frazier,Ke'Bryan Hayes and Brett Sullivan strung a double, three singles and a sacrifice fly together to make it 8-2 in the sixth. Sullivan recorded his second RBI in the seventh when he drove home Horwitz with a bases-loaded single. It was the Pirates' 14th game with 10 or more hits and their second with 15 or more. They set a season high of 18 against the Angels on April 22.
"The guys are playing baseball, playing the game well. They're coming out and competing. We know the work that goes into it. We see that everyday," Don Kelly said. "Starting to see some of the fruits of that. You know, they're staying within themselves and moving the ball forward. When you talk about getting guys in scoring position, trying to find a way, we were able to do that tonight."
Mike Burrows made his fourth major-league start and gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three over 4 1/3 innings. Chase Shugart and Caleb Ferguson threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings before Kyle Nicolas closed it out to secure Kelly's 15th win as the team's manager. This is the first time the Pirates are over .500 under Kelly since taking two of three against the Braves during his first series in early May.
