Pirates 9, Diamondbacks 6: Offense erupts out of nowhere
Bryan Reynolds' three-run home run and Isiah Kiner-Falefa's bases-clearing double in the eighth inning crowned the Pirates' stirring 9-6 come-from-behind victory over the Diamondbacks tonight at Chase Field.
The Pirates, trailing 6-2 heading into the inning, tagged Kevin Ginkel for five earned runs on four hits as Henry Davis, Alexander Canario, Tommy Pham and Ke'Bryan Hayes all reached base safely. Davis scored on Pham's infield single before Kiner-Falefa brought everyone around. Reynolds hit his home run by pullin an inside fastball from former Pittsburgh reliever Jalen Beeks. Those seven runs were the most the Pirates scored in an inning this season.
"Ke’Bryan had a huge walk there to load the bases and then Izzy comes through with a big double," DonKelly said. "Cruzy comes up, busts his butt down the line, puts pressure on the defense to make a play, they don’t, and then Reynolds catches one out in front and launches a three-run homer. It was a great team win."
Mike Burrows, making his second major-league start, allowed five runs, four earned, in 3 1/3 innings. Joey Wentz then allowed one earned run in 3 2/3 innings while retiring 10 straight at one point. Dennis Santana and David Bednar put up a zero each at the end.
• Have won five of past eight games • Lost 20 of past 29 dating to April 26 • Now 8-10 since Kelly became manager
► THE NUMBER
5: The most runs scored in an inning prior to tonight. The Pirates scored that many in an inning twice during their April 14-17 series against the Nationals.
