Pirates 9, Mets 2: Offense honors Parker with 12-hit day
The Pirates' offense exploded again today at PNC Park as a 12-hit performance, aided by one Bryan Reynolds double, sparked a 9-2 win over the Mets, following a one-hour, 29-minute weather delay. It's their first series victory since June 11.
Eight of the 10 Pirates who stepped to the plate recorded a hit, while Andrew McCutchen, Nick Gonzales, Joey Bart and Ke'Bryan Hayes each recorded two. On two different occasions, the Pirates had five straight baserunners reach safely as they drew five walks. McCutchen, Reynolds and Hayes each drove in two runs on an emotional day in which players dealt with the news of Hall of Famer DaveParker’s passing.
“It was a good win for us,” McCutchen said. “It's always tough to hear news like that. So, it was good to go out and win and win in the fashion that we did."
Bailey Falter allowed one run and four hits before the delay, but was picked up by a strong bullpen performance. Braxton Ashcraft threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. Dennis Santana, Caleb Ferguson and David Bednar closed it out with 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
