Pirates 9, Mets 1: Offense (finally) shows up for Keller
The Pirates recorded five extra-base hits and provided Mitch Keller with five runs of support for the first time this season as he earned his first win since March 28 in a 9-1 rout of the Mets tonight at PNC Park.
The offense scored four runs in the second inning as it strung together five hits, including an Alexander Canario RBI double that sailed over Juan Soto's head in right field. Ke'Bryan Hayes added on in the fifth when he doubled home Bryan Reynolds, who went 2 for 5 with a double and three-run home run. Canario doubled twice and seven of the nine Pirates' hitters scored at least one run.
Keller gave up one run -- a fourth-inning home run to Soto -- and five hits while striking out four and walking one over 5 1/3 innings. His pitch count climbed early as he threw 29 pitches in the first inning when the Mets fouled off 13 pitches. He finished with 94 pitches and was taken out after giving up a walk and a single in the sixth.
"The guys were just banging today," Keller said. "It was fun to see. Fun to play behind. Overall, it was just a great game for us."
