Colin Holderman (right thumb inflammation) is heading to the 15-day IL, Don Kelly said this afternoon and Nick Gonzales has been placed on the 60-day IL to make room for Isaac Mattson on the 40-man roster.
Gonzales (ankle) started a rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis this past weekend and is 0 for 6 in two games with three strikeouts. He's eligible to return from the 60-day IL early next week after his stint started on March 28.
Kelly said Holderman's thumb injury "reared it's head," during yesterday's outing against the Reds when he gave up three earned runs and three hits.
Mattson has thrown 18 innings for Indianapolis and produced a 2.50 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. He's converted four of his five save opportunities and struck out 22 batters while giving up 12 hits. He made three appearances for the Pirates last season.
Kelly did not provide an update on Jared Jones, who met with elbow specialist Dr.Keith Meister today.
