Pirates 8, Rangers 3: The bottom of the order rises?
Major League Baseball's most punchless offense poked through for a few on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at PNC Park, the Pirates pushing across five runs in the fifth inning of an 8-3 rout of the Rangers.
Bryan Reynolds, freshly back from paternity leave, had three hits, including a double that snapped the team's string without an extra-base hit at 25 2/3 innings, plus a walk. Tommy Phamhad three hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Spencer Horwitzhad three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Ke'Bryan Hayes had two hits and two RBIs, in addition to three defensive gems. All four players entered the game batting .226 or lower.
"It was good to see," Reynolds would say. "All those guys. All of us. Timely hits, too."
Bailey Falter's remarkable two-month run rolled on with a good-enough 5 1/3 innings of three runs on six hits and five walks. It wasn't the sharpest he's been, but he pounded the four-seamer for 60 percent of his repertoire and, when he stayed low, got the swings and groundouts he'd been seeking. His ERA over the past 10 starts, dating to May 3, is 2.29. His six wins for the season lead the rotation, two more than Paul Skenes.
