Stratton recalled from Indy, Santana placed on bereavement list
Hunter Stratton has been recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis and Dennis Santana has been placed on the bereavement list, per Derek Shelton.
Stratton, whose 2024 season came to an end after rupturing his left patella tendon in August, made 10 appearances with Class AAA Indianapolis this month. Over 11 2/3 innings, he allowed seven runs on 13 hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.
“I think we had to check off some boxes for him just because of the fact he didn’t have much of a spring training, or any spring training," Shelton said this afternoon. "He’s been throwing the ball well. He’s done different things. It’s a situation to get a look at him with having an unfortunate situation.”
After undergoing surgery last summer, Stratton worked tirelessly to finally get to this moment, a return to a big-league team he impacted in a positive way last year with a 3.58 ERA and 33 strikeouts over 37 2/3 innings in 36 appearances. He attacked his rehab head on over the offseason and put himself in a position where he was able to make an appearance during spring training and be ready for the start of the minor-league season.
“I think that goes throughout the whole offseason. He dominated a pretty significant injury and was able to get himself back and in a position to pitch," Shelton said. "Now we just get a chance to look at him. ... With the way he works and how he handles things, I don’t think it was a surprise that he was going to tackle that head on.”
Santana’s placement on that list means he’ll be away from the team for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days. That leaves a significant void for the Pirates to fill when it comes to high-leverage opportunities, as Santana has thrived in frequently pitching the eighth and ninth innings. He's made 13 appearances this season, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 12 1/3 innings. He's registered seven strikeouts and three walks.
"I would say, availability-wise, that right now, with (Justin) Lawrence being down, Santana being down, we’re provided (with) a little bit of challenge with that role," Shelton said. "So we’re going to have to figure it out and when guys get opportunities, they have to get people out.”
