Pirates 3, Reds 1: Heaney, Davis deliver to take series
While the offense once again failed to reach the four-run mark in extending a historic streak to 26 games, the Pirates did just enough offensively to support Andrew Heaney and the bullpen in a 3-1 win over the Reds this afternoon at PNC Park.
"I think the starting staff, the defense has been really really good and the bullpen too, coming in, keeping us in games," Don Kelly said. "Looking back to that game in New York where Chase Shugart came in, bases loaded, one pitch, got out of it, and it's different moments throughout games. Sometimes that leverage has been earlier in games. But finding ways. The starting pitching's been great and the bullpen's stepped up and held them in check."
Henry Davis delivered a go-ahead single in the fourth inning and Adam Frazier added insurance with an RBI single in the eighth.
Heaney allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts before being replaced by Shugart to begin the sixth. Shugart, Tanner Rainey, CalebFerguson and DennisSantana combined to cover four scoreless innings to secure the series win.
• Won two games in a row • Lost 17 of past 23 • 5-7 since Kelly promoted
► THE NUMBER
146: Season run total for the Pirates, now officially less than half of the first-place Cubs' major-league-leading total of 293
