Colin Holderman (right knee sprain)has been activated and Mike Burrows has been optioned back to Class AAA Indianapolis. Shelton said Burrows was an option for length out of the bullpen if they needed it. However, the Pirates' starters have all performed well during this road trip so they haven't needed the added length.
Holderman appeared in two games with Indianapolis and threw 1 2/3 innings while giving up three hits and one home run. He also recorded one strikeout.
When I spoke with Holderman on Friday after his arrival at Dodger Stadium, he said he was feeling good was ready to get back to work: "This is the best I’ve felt on the mound for a long time and I’m excited to get back out there and dominate."
Before being placed on the IL, Holderman made five appearances out of the Pirates' bullpen and recorded a 9.64 ERA. He threw 4 2/3 innings, gave up six hits, five earned runs and walked four. He also struck out six.
He'll present Shelton with another arm out of the bullpen as the Pirates close out their six-game West Coast road trip.
