The Pirates have moved Justin Lawrence (elbow) to the 60-day IL and placed Isiah Kiner-Falefa on the 10-day IL after selecting the contract of relief pitcher Tanner Rainey from Class AAA Indianapolis.
The Lawrence move allows Rainey to be added to the 40-man roster while adding Kiner-Falefa to the 10-day IL clears up a spot on the 26-man roster.
Lawrence has been sidelined since being diagnosed with right elbow inflammation after his appearance against the Angels on April 22. During his most recent medical update the Pirates' senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Lawrence was still awaiting a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister.
When the inflammation flared up in Anaheim, Calif., Derek Shelton said Lawrence came in the next day and "just didn't feel right."
"It was just one of those things, as early as we are in April, we need to make sure he gets looked at," Shelton said then. "He’s in a good spot and really pleased with how he’s been since we’ve acquired him. We just have to make sure he’s alright."
Lawrence is the second member of the Pirates' bullpen to be placed on the 60-day IL as Tim Mayza was added to the list on April 24 after suffering a left shoulder injury.
Kiner-Falefa told me earlier today that he was ready to return to the lineup today or tomorrow after straining his right hamstring on Wednesday while running the bases on Andrew McCutchen's two-run double in the seventh inning. He said he was overcompensating for a bruised left ankle that he suffered in a collision with Paul Skenes during a rundown against the Dodgers. Obviously, the team feels differently and has elected to give him extra rest.
Rainey has appeared in nine games for Indianapolis this season, throwing nine innings while producing a 6.00 ERA. He's given up seven hits and four walks while striking out 12. He allowed two earned runs in two different outings and made five scoreless appearances.
