Tomczyk: Oviedo's rehab stint is a 'monumental accomplishment'
Todd Tomczyk described JohanOviedo beginning his rehab assignment with the Florida Complex League Pirates as a "monumental accomplishment" given his long road back from both Tommy John surgery and a right lat strain sustained during spring training.
Oviedo pitched in his first FCL game on Monday and came out of it feeling good, Tomczyk said this morning, despite allowing two runs on three hits over 2/3 of an inning. Oviedo is expected to start for low Class A Bradenton this weekend.
Tomcyzk said Oviedo threw simulated games prior to his rehab assignment and was built up to about three innings and 50-55 pitches.
"He is going to go through a normal starter's build and that will hopefully get him to five or six ups as he ramps back up," Tomczyk said. "We are collaboratively meeting as a rehab group and a pitching department, notably with Ovi, to see how he responds and see if he needs more. It's less about overall volume and more about execution and how his body responds. He's been built up to this volume for him to withstand this volume, that's just part of the journey and the next step."
• ColinHolderman (thumb) has appeared in two games during his rehab assignment, including one last night with Class AAA Indianapolis in which he allowed two runs on three hits over 2/3 of an inning.
"He texted me last night and said, 'Hey, I feel great, I'm getting dialed in,'" Tomczyk said.
The thumb injury has been bothering Holderman off and on for the last year and a half, but Tomczyk said there is optimism that he can get through the rest of the season without any more issues. The plan is for Holderman to be re-assessed at the end of the season to see if something else needs to be done.
• TimMayza (left shoulder lat muscle strain) and JustinLawrence (right elbow inflammation) have progressed to throwing out to 120 feet and have shown "good velocity and good intensity" during their return to throw programs.
"Most notably, they are recovering very well," Tomczyk said.
• RyanBorucki (low back inflammation) threw a side session this morning and is making nice progress, according to Tomczyk. He'll be assessed once again to determine if he needs another time off the mound.
• JaredJones (elbow) is about six weeks post-op and is out of the post-op splint. He continues to work on range of motion and the next step will be for him to work on strength.
• EnmanuelValdez (shoulder) is approaching the eight-week mark post-op and continues to work on his range of motion.
• EndyRodriguez (right elbow inflammation) is approaching the two-week mark following his PRP injection and has regained full range of motion. He's working through the next phase with strength.
