Tommy Pham has been suspended for one game by Major League Baseball after the 37-year-old outfielder made "inappropriate actions towards fans" in Tuesday's game against the Angels. Pham said he learned about the suspension from his agent and confirmed that he is appealing the suspension. He is in the lineup tonight hitting sixth.
While sitting at his locker in the Pirates' clubhouse, Pham said he was disappointed in Major League Baseball because he was touched by fan while corralling a hit in the left field corner. The fan was not removed from the game and was just moved to a different seat in the ballpark. Pham then acted out a lewd gesture toward a group of fans in the left field corner, which was the cause of the suspension.
“Where does the ground stop? The fan grabbed me,” Pham said. “Per our rules, from my understanding, he is supposed to be ejected from the game. He wasn't removed from the game. They just sat him in a different seat. So you know, now we're allowing fans to grab the players on balls in play with no repercussions. So, we'll see how this plays out.”
The suspension was supposed to take place during tonight's game against the Dodgers, but it will be paused while the appeal process plays out. Pham added that he’s talked to his lawyers to see if he has any legal options.
After the incident, Pham was heckled throughout the game and was often boo'd and screamed at. That came as no surprise to Pham.
"I get heckled every game, home or away, so that's nothing new to me. I'm used to it," Pham said.
