The Pirates are trading left-handed reliever CalebFerguson to the Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect JeterMartinez, per source.
Martinez, 19, was the 13th-ranked prospect in the Mariners' system, according to MLB Pipeline. At the time of the trade, he was 2-6 with a 6.18 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 16 starts with low Class A Modesto. Martinez is now ranked as the No. 21-ranked prospect in the Pirates' organization, per MLB Pipeline.
Ferguson went 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 45 appearances with the Pirates this season. He struck out 34 batters and walked 14 over 43 1/3 innings. Ferguson signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Pirates in the offseason, so this move isn't unexpected. One of the few guys on expiring deals that was likely to go.
"He was really an unsung hero on the team, as far as not a lot of fanfare and talk about him, but he was so consistent, so good for us, meant a lot to us this year, and how he went about it and the performance on the field," DonKelly said. "We wish him the best, too.”
