The Pirates have acquired Mets left fielder Alexander Canario for cash, per source. They've also transferred Jared Jones from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list to make room for Canario on the 40-man roster.
Canario has played in 21 major-league games and has hit for a .286 average with a .857 OPS in 42 at-bats. He's added five runs, 12 hits, two home runs and eight RBIs, all of which came for the Cubs over the last two seasons. In his second major-league game (first start), which came against the Pirates on Sept. 19, 2023 at Wrigley Field, Canario became the first player in MLB history to hit a grand slam and record five-plus RBIs in his first major-league start.
The 24-year-old from Montecristi, Dominican Republic, played in 17 games for the Mets this spring training. He hit .306/.419/.611 with three home runs and eight RBIs. He also struck out 15 times and walked seven times.
"When he's had some opportunities in the big leagues, he's hit for power. He has some swing and miss, which we've seen, and that's going to be a part of his game, but it's big-time power, he's a good athlete and he plays good defense in the corners," Mets President of Baseball Operations DavidStearns said during a Grapefruit League game on March 23. "I think the Cubs just ran out of opportunities for him. They made some moves, obviously they acquired KyleTucker, and didn't have the outfield reps for him. We were fortunate to be able to acquire him at the front end of camp. He's done a nice job for us in camp, he's a great guy and we'll see how this next week goes."
Canario does not have any options remaining so he'll need to be added to the active roster. He was ranked the Cubs' No. 12 prospect last season, according to MLB Pipeline. He signed with the San Francisco Giants for $60,000 in 2016 and was ranked as their sixth-best prospect in 2020, according to MLB Pipeline. He was traded to the Cubs in 2021 as a part of the Kris Bryant deal.
He hit 37 home runs and drove in 97 runs between three different minor-league levels in 2022 and slashed .243/.336/.514 with 18 home runs and 47 RBIs in 64 games at Class AAA Iowa last season.
