White Sox 10, Pirates 1: Routed by one of majors' worst
JUSTIN BERL / GETTY
Tommy Pham watches a home run by the White Sox's Edgar Quero in the first inning tonight at PNC Park.
The White Sox, with their American-League-worst 33-65 record, struck for three of the four runs charged to BaileyFalter in the first inning and sent the Pirates to their ninth loss in their last 10 games with an ugly 10-1 defeat tonight at PNC Park.
“We were flat," DonKelly said. "When you go down 3-zip in the first -- the starting pitching has been so good for us this year -- it’s tough. But from an offensive standpoint, we need to find a way. The pitching has been so good for us, we need to find a way to pick them up on nights like tonight. I thought we had some good at-bats, hit some balls hard, not enough, but finding a way to have that energy and have the offense drive it.”
Falter retired Chicago's first two batters before giving up a solo home run to Edgar Quero, an RBI double to AndrewBenintendi and a run-scoring single to Luis Robert Jr. He also gave up a solo shot -- his seventh home run allowed in three starts this month -- to Robert in the fourth. Falter allowed six hits and a walk while striking out two over four innings, his second straight start of five innings or fewer. Braxton Ashcraft and Yohan Ramirez combined to allow six runs in relief.
The Pirates, now 20 games under .500 at 39-59, have lost nine of 10.
