White Sox 7, Pirates 2: Swept by the American League's worst
JUSTIN K. ALLER / GETTY
Miguel Vargas celebrates his three-run home run with White Sox teammate Chase Meidroth in the first inning.
Ben Cherington remains employed.
That was true before the Pirates’ first pitch against the White Sox this afternoon at PNC Park, it was true all through Andrew Heaney’s latest debacle of a start, and it was true even after being clubbed yet again, 7-2, by the American League’s worst team, one that’d been the last in Major League Baseball to sweep a series … but isn’t anymore.
Yeah, I don’t know what to say anymore. That’s 11 losses in 12 games. That’s 39-61 through 100 games for a 99-loss pace. Oh, and hey, just for fun but not really, that’s a 10,879-10,880 all-time record over the franchise’s 144 years, marking the first time below .500 since HonusWagner was still a lad in 1903.
There’s evidently nothing Cherington, in his sixth year and worse than ever, can do to get fired by BobNutting. But that’s only the beginning of this organization’s stomach-turning lack of accountability, as I’ll write in a column this evening.
