Spencer Horwitz (wrist) is nine weeks into his rehab and is hitting and taking ground balls with no restrictions, as he continues to trend in a positive direction, Todd Tomczyk said this morning.
He is currently ramping up the volume of work at the plate and was scheduled to hit on the field last week, but the session was postponed due to inclement weather. Horwitz is expected to travel with the team to Cincinnati to continue his hitting progression.
"He is trending in a really good position to have conversations with the performance team, (Derek Shelton) and Ben (Cherington) about how and when we can consider rehab games, hopefully later this month or early next," Tomczyk said. "He's in a really good spot."
Horwitz is not yet hitting off the Trajekt machine, Tomczyk said, but he is hitting velocity. It is possible he could head to Bradenton, Fla. before beginning his rehab assignment, but that has yet to be determined.
More from Tomczyk:
• Jared Jones (elbow) was examined by Dr. Frank at about the three-week mark and he presented a pain-free clinical exam, which Tomczyk described as a "very important landmark for him and his rehab progression." Jones started his two-handed plyo ball program and was symptom free in doing so. The continued plan for Jones is to repeat the CT scan in another three weeks at the six-week mark.
"If that shows the healing that we all envisioned, he will then begin a throwing program at that point as well," Tomczyk said.
• Bryan Reynolds (teres major muscle strain) is dealing with an injury to the back of the shoulder rather than a triceps injury. He played catch out to 70 feet today and had no issues with throwing. He continues to by symptom free when hitting from both sides of the plate and is making nice progress. They will continue to see how he responds to the throwing and he will hopefully be a full complementary player sooner rather than later.
• Jared Triolo (back) is improving every day, Tomczyk said. He is not back to baseball activities yet, but the goal is to get him back to baseball activities as soon as possible. He projects to resume baseball activities this weekend and will likely need a rehab assignment.
• Nick Gonzales (ankle) is partial weight bearing, compared to last week when he was full non-weight bearing. That's a very important step in his rehab, according to Tomczyk. He will undergo serial imaging in 10 days
"If we get the healing that we'd like to see, then it's off to the races for Gonzo."
• JohanOviedo (right lat strain) is approaching the six-week mark in his recovery and he's coming to Pittsburgh to be re-examined by Dr. (Darren) Frank on Friday. He'll have a serial image, an exam and then the group will collaborate with Dr. Keith Meister, Tomczyk said.
"The goal, which I believe we will obtain and he'll get there, is to begin throwing on Saturday," Tomczyk said. "So that's very encouraging news for Johan."
• Dauri Moreta (elbow) is throwing live BPs down at the Florida complex. He is doing that once a week, followed by a side in between, and is progressing well, according to Tomczyk. The goal for Moreta is to begin throwing simulated games by the end of the month or early next month. Tomczyk said he's on track to potentially be considered for rehab assignments in early May.
• Colin Holderman (knee) has resumed throwing and just finished playing catch out to 120 feet with zero to minimal symptoms. He'll continue to ramp up his activity to hopefully throwing off a slope this weekend.
• Tanner Rainey (shoulder) was sidelined for a short period down at Class AAA Indianapolis, but he is now active with the club.
• Nick Yorke (shoulder) has been battling persistent symptoms since spring training. The group felt they wanted to make sure they didn't make the injury a "long term thing." It stopped him from hitting and throwing for a couple of days, but he resumed throwing today, out to 90 feet. He's expected to be back in the Indy lineup sooner rather than later.
