For the first time this spring, Spencer Horwitz was out on the practice fields at Pirate City with a cast/brace on his injured right wrist. Following this morning's workout, I caught up with Horwitz in the Pirates' clubhouse for a one-on-one interview to discuss the wrist injury and the surgical procedure that will now keep him out for six to eight weeks:
• On the details of the injury: "It's new, and it's hard to believe that it's not related, but it seems completely different. I've had wrist problems in the past and I've been able to cover it up pretty good whether it be with painkillers or cortisone shots, and I couldn't do that anymore. Eventually just had to get the surgery and hopefully I'm better for it in the long run."
• On if the injury is to the thumb: "It's like my thumb extensor in the wrist area. It's a lot."
• On the surgical procedure: "Surgery was quick and easy. It was done by Dr. Thomas Graham in Allentown, Pennsylvania, he's one of the best, I know that. I know he's done some pretty high-level guys and he said it was best-case scenario. He said he wasn't sure until he'd go in there, but when I woke up, he was fired up, so it was good."
• On how he's feeling going into the next couple of weeks: "Attacking rehab. The sports medicine staff here has been second to none. It's been great communication, constantly slowing getting better and pushing it. I'm happy with where I'm at so far. Not happy I got hurt, but that's part of what comes with the territory."
• On if there was a moment when he felt like something was wrong: "I'd say probably around two weeks after PiratesFest, I was like, 'This doesn't feel right.' That's when we saw the doctor and that's when we decided to get the surgery."
• On the six-to-eight-week timetable for his recovery: "That's what I've been told. That's what we're aiming for. Whether it be a little bit before that or a little bit after that, it depends on how my rehab goes."
Ben Cherington spoke more about Horwitz's injury during media day at LECOM Park and added the 6-8 week timeline is a return to game action:
