Williams hopes to build up trust, relationship with fanbase
Pirates President Travis Williams addressed the recent backlash associated with the Roberto Clemente logo being replaced at PNC Park and the disposal of the Bucco Bricks following a ceremony this morning unveiling new permanent markers at the location of Three Rivers Stadium on the North Shore.
"At the end of the day, our fans are first and foremost in our minds. That's my job to make sure we build that relationship and that trust with them," Williams said. "Obviously, in the last couple of weeks we've had a couple of issues with that, but we've obviously owned up to those mistakes. They were mistakes on our part and we're sorry for those, but we're looking forward and hoping to build that trust and that relationship back up with our fanbase."
The Clemente logo has been restored on the Clemente Wall underneath the right-field foul pole inside the ballpark, while messages and tributes featured on the bricks will be commemorated in a permanent display, Williams said. The organization has also offered the opportunity for fans who received original bricks to also receive replica versions.
Williams said there is no target date for when the new brick display will be available. He also explained that the bricks were replaced three times, and in some instances even more due to the wear and tear sustained over time.
"With the weather we get here, the climate, the unevenness and the buckling, they became trip hazards and safety hazards for our fans. The real impetus there was to make sure we replaced the concrete, put it in a way that it was a safe condition, always with a commitment, and we said that back in January, at the end of the day that we replaced the bricks with some form of permanent display," Williams said. "We want to make sure that's something the fans will really enjoy and like and add to the ballpark experience, not just something we slap up. At the end of the day, we're going to make sure we take our time to get that right and it takes time to install things. We don't have a target date, but rest assured we are expediting that review and that commitment and we will get something up that memorializes the bricks and the messages that were there."
As for the Clemente logo, there seemed to be a lack of communication between the Pirates and the Clemente family regarding the replacement of the logo on the right-field wall. Roberto Clemente Jr. said he was shocked that the change was made without his family's knowledge. However, conversations were had and matters were evidently resolved.
"Obviously I take everything as an opportunity. I think it's a great opportunity to do a sit down and that's what we did," Clemente said. "We'll continue the conversations, I think. I always say I was born with an eye patch. I will never change. We're in a position of strength, in terms of being able to establish, or reestablish a great relationship. ... Now it's time to move ahead and build on top of that."
Williams added, "We've had a longstanding, great relationship with the Clemente family, I think rooted in the fact that we both want to celebrate the legacy of Roberto Clemente and what he means to Pittsburgh, not only as a player but as a humanitarian. We look forward to continuing those efforts going forward."
