Our subscribers, I'm happy to say, won't need any introduction to Greg Macafee!
He'd been with us for more than a year beginning in the summer of 2024, covering the Steelers, Pirates and Pitt football/basketball at different intervals, working as a reporter, photographer and videographer, after which he began doing journalism instruction and other work in Ohio.
Now, he's back, and it'll be in a largely familiar role, albeit in the new context of the 2.0 thing we're building: Most of what he contributes will be visual, from the cracks of the bats in Bradenton, to the banging of pucks off plexiglass in Cranberry and, of course, to all the anticipated sights and sounds in Latrobe.
There'll also be a beat in the mix, but I'm not ready to share that part yet.
Please join us in welcoming Greg back. Just an all-around good dude, worker, the whole deal.
MORE TO COME
Lots of you have been asking lots of questions about potential hires, particularly with the imminent closure of the Post-Gazette.
I can share that there've been conversations with good people there, but I can also share that it's no more or less than what we've had with those at other places. When the word gets out in this industry that anyone's hiring, it tends to spread, and this isn't an exception. It's known that we're profitable, we're growing, and our pay's more than competitive, so that helps.
We're not done hiring, but I also don't want to waste anyone's time. Which is to say: We're a long ways off from being a startup. We're not training. Big-league experience is a must.
• Friday Insider will return next week, and it'll be a full-staff effort. Apologies for the absence through the holidays. I'd say we were all busier than anyone had anticipated.
• Taylor Haase will cover the Penguins' trip to Seattle and Western Canada all next week. Chris Halicke will cover the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., the following week. And you'll never guess where Jose Negron's heading in three short weeks.
• We left up the emojis and up-cups/down-cups for the Penguins-Flyers live file a couple nights ago, and it functioned fine. We'll keep an eye on it.
• We're all working to clean up the Asylum from a few bad seeds. As we tell them, criticize the teams, the athletes, whatever ... but go after each other, get political, get racist ... and get gone. It's an ongoing process, but very real progress already has been made.
• Feel free to add a generous review of any aspect of our business on our Google business listing, or on our Appleand Spotify podcast channels. Makes a significant difference.
