Site Stuff: Coverage that connects (through alerts!)
Our credo, 'Coverage That Connects,' was coined a decade ago by an ad agency, Phenomenon, up on Mount Washington, and they'll always be credited for that. But we're still the ones who have to make that connection happen.
Meaning us AND you.
The past month's seen our app/site take significant strides in this direction as related to our subscribers, and we couldn't be more pleased with the results and reaction:
• App alerts now work for everyone. Meaning the alerts that get sent out by our staff. That allows us to keep you current on the latest with your favorite team.
• All of the notifications, whether an alert for our content or another subscriber trying to reply or reach you through comments, also now work for everyone. That allows actual conversations to take place. And it spares you endless scrolling to see if anyone replied to you.
• Now, for the first time, both of these types of notifications are collected for you under that bell you'll see atop the home page. The stack on the left shows the comment replies. The stack on the right shows the alerts.
• If you tap the bell and DON'T see any notifications or alerts, visit your profile (top left corner of home page), thumb down a bit to PREFERENCES, then Notifications, and tap Select. Once there, atop that list, you'll see a toggle for Show Alerts in Bell. Toggle that on.
• A final point: If you ever want to reach someone without replying to a comment, you can just tag their handle in any comment you make. Start with the @ symbol, then begin typing their handle and, once you see the right one appear, tap that to choose it. That comment will now send an alert the person you've tagged.
Now, naturally, all of this is contingent on being a subscriber here, as opposed to just a casual reader. So you definitely should ... DO THAT! Go ad-free! Become part of our community! Partake in daily Live Qs with our reporters! Also and relevant, support what we do as independent media! This is still the best way!
I'll be in comments, as ever, if anyone has questions.
SPECIAL WORKERS DRIVE: 224
For the week on our annual Special Workers Drive, we had 16 new subscriptions committed for a total of 224 toward our goal of 1,000.
For anyone unfamiliar, we offer deeply discounted subscriptions to teachers, police, fire, EMTs, nurses and volunteers, and we have this drive to ensure we're not doing so at a long-term loss. (Their prices never change.) Many of those people share that they'd never otherwise have signed up, so it's proven to be plenty worthwhile.
• We still have a few long-sleeve NFL Draft hoodies/sweatshirts at our ONLINE SHOP, with prices at HALF OFF, and shipping FREE! (The T-shirts and caps are all gone.) But hurry!
• Check out our all-new baseball statistics, standings, schedule and scoreboard. Of course, we'll add those for football and hockey once those seasons approach.
• Travel ahead: José Negron will fly to Sacramento, Calif., and Denver next week to cover the Pirates against the Athletics and Rockies. Chris Halicke will cover his third consecutive All-Star Game, early next month in Philadelphia.
• A reminder: A subscription to this app/site covers only that, not to any memberships we offer on YouTube. And the same is true, obviously, in reverse. The reason: The commerce platforms have nothing in common.
• Feel free to add a review of any aspect of our business on our Google business listing, or on our Appleand Spotify podcast channels. Makes a real difference.
BACK TO BUSINESS
• Our page-view numbers for our most recent full seven-day span, June 5-11, were 574,997. Our most-read original piece was the staff's Friday Insider of eight days ago, at 7,849.
• Our video views, also for June 5-11, were 207,060. Our most-watched program was my Monday Daily Shot of Steelers on DK Metcalf's outlook, at 8,389.
