Site Stuff: A souped-up menu and other new app features!
We never, ever stop trying to get better. That goes for our reporting, the content that results from that reporting and, of course, the platform that brings it to you.
New to our app/site right now:
• Open the menu. The main one in the top right corner of the home page. You'll see new collections of direct links to all of our regular features (Live Qs, Friday Insider, Cartoon Canon, Subscriber Snaps, etc.), as well as all of our regular podcasts and videos. Many of you'd been asking for this. Took a while, but Dali and I got it (mostly) done this weekend.
• On that same menu, tap the arrow that shows up to the right of the line with the Pirates. What'll unfold is a direct line to all our new baseball statistics, standings, schedule and scoreboard. Of course, we'll add this for football and hockey once those seasons approach.
• For subscribers only: The alerts are better than ever. For one, everyone should finally be receiving them now. For another, when you tap that notifications bell atop the home page, you'll now see not only when someone's responded to one of your comments, but also a collection of any news/content alerts that've been sent out by our staff. This was BoomPress' concept and execution. (For now, the alerts send you to the comments of an article rather than the article itself, but we've asked for that to get corrected.)
We're super-stoked about the alerts, in particular. We've long believed this would be vital to keeping our readers connected to the product and even to each other.
Oh, and if you aren't yet subscribed ... yeah, DO THAT! Go ad-free! Become part of our community! Partake in daily Live Qs with our reporters! Also and relevant, support what we do as independent media! This is still the best way!
SPECIAL WORKERS DRIVE: 208
Just a wonderful week for the annual Special Workers Drive, with 144 subscriptions committed for a total of 208 toward our goal of 1,000!
For anyone unfamiliar, we offer deeply discounted subscriptions to teachers, police, fire, EMTs, nurses and volunteers, and we have the drive to ensure we're not doing so at a long-term loss. (Their prices never change.) Many of those people shared that they'd never otherwise have signed up, so it proved to be plenty worthwhile.
• We still have a few long-sleeve NFL Draft hoodies/sweatshirts at our ONLINE SHOP, with prices at HALF OFF, and shipping FREE! (The T-shirts and caps are all gone.) But hurry!
• Travel ahead: José Negron will fly to Sacramento, Calif., and Denver later this month to cover the Pirates against the Athletics and Rockies. It'll be our site's first visit to Sacramento. (Although I once covered a week-long U.S. Olympic track and field trial there way back in the newspaper days.) Also, Taylor Haase would be in Wilkes-Barre if the AHL's Eastern Conference final reaches a Game 7. (We'll know that by Sunday night after Game 6.) Also, if the Penguins advance to the Final, she'd do the entire thing, home and road.
• A reminder: A subscription to this app/site covers only that, not to any memberships we offer on YouTube. And the same is true, obviously, in reverse. The reason: The commerce platforms have nothing in common.
• Feel free to add a review of any aspect of our business on our Google business listing, or on our Appleand Spotify podcast channels. Makes a real difference.
BACK TO BUSINESS
• Our page-view numbers for our most recent full seven-day span, May 22-28, were 617,397. Our most-read original piece was the staff's Friday Insider of eight days ago, at 9,249.
• Our video views, also for May 22-28, were 195,610. Our most-watched program was my Tuesday Daily Shot of Steelers on T.J. Watt's outlook, at 12,349.
