Ever notice how I'll get at least a little annoyed when asked about some report about one of our teams that emanated from somewhere else?
Well, that's genuine. I'm competitive, too. As is our entire company. That's how we came to be No. 1 in sports readership in the Pittsburgh market. You have to want to win.
But what's winning, really, in business?
As I see it, it's doing right by those who do right by you. Meaning, of course, our readers, our viewers, our listeners and, always above all, our paid subscribers to this particular app/site. If we can achieve that, the business will always be on firm footing and, ideally, it'll grow, as well.
One thing I'll hear commonly from the subscribers is that they like to think of us as a one-stop shop for their Pittsburgh sports needs. That came up, in fact, just recently with the installation of our shiny new baseball statistics, standings, schedule and boxscores. People liked that they could just tap another tab for that information rather than searching somewhere else.
Well, we're about to take that further and do likewise with the general content.
Beginning somewhat soon, you'll be able to find in our respective team feeds when some news about the Steelers, Penguins or Pirates has broken somewhere, even if it's just a small slice that might be of interest to our audience. Or maybe it's a broader feature. Or an interview. Or something somebody spoke of consequence on a podcast.
Because ... why not?
Because we can also, optimally, exercise our own limited judgment as to the validity of that outside work and, if it's counter to our own reporting, explain our own stance. Which is something else readers have been seeking from us since ... wow, forever.
My only responses to that sort of thing in the past have been to grit my teeth or bark something. But I'm ready to try a modified approach and see how it goes, while at the same time not changing a thing about how we do our own reporting.
Now, how will everyone know what's distinctly ours?
Easy: Seek out the blue. That's our foundational color, anyway. But you'll see, beginning on the Pirates feed, that there'll be the standard ALL presentation when it's opened. But if one taps the blue DKPS filter button at the top, all you'll get is what José Negron or whoever happens to be reporting right from PNC Park or wherever. So there's no confusion.
So, it's like this ...
Seth Hernandez pitches lights-out in his Class A debut in Greensboro, N.C.?
That's a yellow.
José has stuff from the ballpark?
That's a blue.
Welcoming any and all feedback, as always!
NFL DRAFT MERCH SALE!
We still have (boxes of) NFL Draft sweatshirts, (not nearly as many) caps and (very few) T-shirts in our ONLINE SHOP, with prices up to HALF OFF, and shipping FREE!
And, of course, we'll add football and hockey once those seasons approach.
INSIDE THE WORKS
• Mega-thanks to Adam and all of our BoomPress developers for straightening out a bunch of stuff, notably the notifications that'd gone dormant for some Android app users. In the works: Even more benefits to receiving those notifications.
• Additional tinkering's been done with the new baseball data. Which is really nice, by the way!
• Greg Macafee's back on the job with us beginning tomorrow with the start of the Steelers' OTAs. You'll see his work from the South Side all week.
• A reminder I'll be making a lot: A subscription to this app/site covers only that. It doesn't apply to any memberships we offer on YouTube. And the same is true, obviously, in reverse. The reason: The commerce platforms have nothing in common.
• Feel free to add a review of any aspect of our business on our Google business listing, or on our Appleand Spotify podcast channels. Makes a real difference.
BACK TO BUSINESS
• Our page-view numbers for our most recent full seven-day span, May 8-14, were 639,278. Our most-read original piece was my column from the Steelers' rookie minicamp on the South Side, at 10,230.
• Our video views, also for May 8-14, were 207,231. Our most-watched program was our Live Shot of Steelers from minicamp, at 11,224.
